When Paul first came to see me at 50, he described himself as someone who had “deluded himself” for a bit too long. His weight had been climbing for years, his BMI was over 30, and a recent health assessment had been the wake-up call he couldn’t ignore: elevated triglycerides, rising glucose, and blood pressure that was starting to drift into a worrying range.
“I started the process feeling unsure about what foods were actually right for me. I was carrying concerns about my weight, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels.” – Paul
On top of that, he was dealing with years of IBS symptoms – loose stools, bloating, and flatulence – that were impacting his confidence and quality of life.
Despite being more active in adulthood, including regular CrossFit sessions, Paul felt stuck. He knew alcohol was playing a role, his bowels were unpredictable, and he couldn’t quite translate his good intentions into consistent habits.
“Like many people, I’d read conflicting advice, tried various plans, and found myself increasingly confused by the noise.” – Paul
His goals were clear:
- Reduce blood pressure
- Reduce his HbA1c
- Lose weight
- Finally get on top of his gut symptoms.
Paul’s main meals were mainly good quality whole food ingredients, and Paul enjoyed cooking.
After years of self-education he knew what he should be eating, but evening snacking was something that plagued him, and this was often associated with alcohol, which he used as a reward and to wind down after work.
Late night screen use stopped his body from recognising his natural wake-sleep cycle and he was often going to bed after midnight, wondering why he felt so tired the next day.
Small shifts, strong foundations
Paul decided to invest in our 3-month Transformation Programme, giving us time and space for weekly support at the beginning and then regular follow-ups to embed new habits.
We started with the basics: balancing his blood sugars with a more satisfying, nutrient-dense breakfast and snacks (if needed) and increasing his hydration. Overall fibre consumption was increased, focusing specifically on soluble fibre, to slow bowel transit time and some basic bile and gut supplements were recommended to support.
We also introduced Paul to ways he could tune into his hunger and fullness, rather than eating on autopilot and depending on counting macros, which he found a huge relief.
Within the first few weeks, Paul noticed:
- He wasn’t ravenous mid-morning anymore and could comfortably get through to lunch
- His blood pressure began to improve
- Weight started to shift too.
Supporting the gut and the bigger picture
Not everything was smooth sailing at first. As Paul began to make dietary changes, his IBS symptoms worsened slightly – a reminder that there is no one-size-fits-all approach.
Rather than forcing a plan that wasn’t working, we pivoted. We arranged for a comprehensive stool analysis test, worked on embedding mindful eating to help his nervous system and digestion work together, and overhauled his evening routine, reducing late-night screen time, bringing in reading instead, and prioritising an earlier bedtime.
Paul quickly noticed that better sleep meant waking more rested, feeling less tired, and making better choices for himself the next day.
Often, it’s the simple changes that create the most powerful results – but identifying what isn’t working and knowing what to do instead can be difficult without the right support. Through our work together, Paul gained clarity on both.
“What stood out immediately with Caroline was the clarity and structure she brought. From the beginning, it was made clear that this would be an empirical journey — guided by evidence, not just theory or trend.
Caroline didn’t rely solely on data points; she placed just as much emphasis on how I was feeling — my energy levels, my sleep quality, my relationship to food, and my emotional state.“ – Paul
A pivotal moment came when Paul completed his Health and Wellness Vision, a powerful exercise that helped him define his “why.” Reflecting on what he truly wanted for his future, and how his life would improve by achieving it, strengthened his determination to avoid the early heart attack risk his father had faced.
With this deeper purpose in mind, he set clear fitness goals and began to see his nutrition and lifestyle choices as part of a far bigger, more meaningful picture.
Coaching exercises, such as the Wheel of Life, encouraged Paul to look beyond food and exercise, helping him evaluate how he spent his time and energy across areas like work, relationships, and enjoyment.
A personal strengths session further reinforced just how capable and resilient he already was. While the process wasn’t always comfortable, it was transformative — shifting his mindset and empowering him to approach his health with confidence, intention, and self-belief.
“Over time, the results began to speak for themselves. I noticed more consistent energy throughout the day. My sleep improved. I began to lose weight in a sustainable way.
Most importantly for me, both my blood pressure and blood sugar levels moved into a healthier range — something that had previously felt out of reach. These weren’t short-term wins, either; they were grounded in lasting behaviour changes.” – Paul
Gut healing, mindset shifts, and real-life tests
As Paul progressed, he made further changes which continued to support more stable energy and gut health. Using his stool test results as a guide, we identified some of the reasons for persistent gut symptoms and trialled temporarily removing certain foods and adding targeted gut-support supplements.
I also encouraged him to read “This Naked Mind” by Annie Grace to help him explore his relationship with alcohol and its impact on his gut and liver health, and on his mental wellbeing. His earlier strengths work came into its own here; Paul reminded himself that he had successfully tackled harder challenges before – and this time, he had a clear vision and a plan.
“The process was incredibly collaborative. Caroline shared insights into how different foods affect the body, helping me make sense of the “why” behind each decision.
This wasn’t about being handed a rigid plan — it was coaching in the truest sense. I was encouraged to build my own strategies, test them, and adapt them over time. That sense of agency was key. I felt involved, not managed.” – Paul
Then came Christmas.
Paul loosened the reins and enjoyed the break – as he should – but he quickly felt the consequences: sluggishness, lower energy, a rise in blood pressure and weight, and a return of some gut discomfort. Instead of labelling this as failure, we treated it as feedback.
With foundations in place, he was able to get back on track in January. His comment on his progress form summed it up perfectly: “Get back on track, be more awesome.” He had realised that these were not short-term “rules” but long-term choices for the life he wanted.
As our work together continued, Paul kept certain foods out temporarily to allow healing, and for the first time in years, his bowel movements improved considerably. This was a huge win!
With more stable digestion, he could better absorb nutrients from the meals he was now consistently preparing and enjoying. In the gym, he hit a strength milestone that gave him a huge confidence boost, and we made sure he was fuelling his training properly with whole foods rather than relying on stress hormones to get him through.
When progress dipped and life got loud
Like most real journeys, Paul’s wasn’t linear. Gut symptoms dipped again and work stress increased. We adjusted the plan, ran food intolerance testing to make sure we weren’t missing anything, and focused on reinforcing the basics: sleep, stress management, and sustainable routines.
Paul didn’t need more information – he needed support to remember what worked for him and accountability to follow through.
We organised a simple finger-prick vitamin D test and also requested key blood markers from his GP to check in on fundamentals like red blood cell health, cholesterol, blood sugar management, and liver health. These results helped guide our next steps and reassured Paul that the work he was doing was moving him in the right direction.
A new way of looking after himself
Paul chose to continue with follow-up appointments beyond his initial three-month 1-1 programme, recognising that some health goals take longer and deserve ongoing support.
Over time, he built not just a healthier body, but a different relationship with his health altogether. He learned how to read his body’s signals, understood what his gut needed, and recognised how sleep, stress, and food choices all intertwined.
“As the programme progressed, we moved from a more intensive early phase into something lighter-touch but still structured. That gradual shift made it easier to embed the changes into my daily life. And yes — I’m still applying what I learned.” – Paul
Most importantly, Paul no longer saw his health as something that was happening to him. He now understands that his daily choices genuinely shape his future – from his risk of heart disease to his energy, mood, and confidence.
He has a clear vision for the life he wants, the tools to support his gut and metabolic health, and the self-belief to keep going, even when life inevitably throws him a curveball.
Paul’s story is a powerful reminder that change doesn’t have to be dramatic or perfect to be life-changing. With the right support, a clear “why,” and a willingness to keep coming back to the basics, it is absolutely possible to move from “deluding myself” to feeling back in charge of your health again.
Paul’s transformational results:
- Improved sleep
- Consistent energy
- Reduced blood pressure
- Fasting blood sugars in range
- Weight loss that felt sustainable
- Improved gut health
- Lasting behaviour change to support Paul’s health for the rest of his life
A final note from Paul:
“If you’re thinking about working with Integral Wellness, I’d say this: if you want a short-cut, a gimmick, or a one-size-fits-all meal plan, this probably isn’t for you.
But if you’re looking for an evidence-based, highly personalised and deeply human approach to improving your health, I can’t recommend Caroline highly enough. I experienced one of the most comprehensive and personalised approaches to health and wellbeing I’ve ever encountered.”
