The festive season has a magic to it, but it also has a way of draining even the most resilient among us. By mid-December, the combination of late nights, rich food, alcohol, deadlines, social commitments, and disrupted routines can leave your energy feeling fragile. Fatigue becomes so normal that many people simply accept it as part of the month. But it doesn’t have to be.
In my latest blog for Tonic Health, I’ve explored how you can navigate December with more stability, clarity, and calm by making small yet meaningful adjustments to support your body.
One of the biggest themes is sleep. At this time of year, your nights may naturally run later, but the bigger issue is the knock-on effect on your circadian rhythm. Even a slight shift in timing can leave your morning cortisol rising too late, creating grogginess that lingers long after you’ve woken. Consistency, particularly around wake time, becomes one of the most powerful ways to protect your energy, even when your diary is packed.
Food is another quiet contributor to festive fatigue. The season tends to be built around beige buffets, sugary treats and refined carbs, which push blood sugar up quickly and bring it crashing down soon after. These fluctuations are exhausting, both physically and mentally. What helps is not restriction, but rebalancing: adding colour, protein and nutrient density back into your meals so your mitochondria have what they need to produce steady energy.
Rest, interestingly, doesn’t always come from a full day off. In December, it often comes from tiny moments — a one-minute pause between tasks, a few slow breaths before eating, a short walk to reset after a busy morning. These micro-rests calm the nervous system far more effectively than most people realise, especially when paired with the gentle boundaries that allow you to say “not tonight” without guilt.
Daylight and movement also play a quiet but pivotal role. A few minutes of morning light can help recalibrate your internal clock, and light, frequent movement supports blood flow, lymphatic health and mood — all of which underpin your energy at this time of year.
And then there’s your immune system. Winter viruses carry an energetic cost, often leaving lingering fatigue. Supporting key nutrients now can help keep your defences stronger and your energy more stable.
